EXHIBIT: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE WOMAN? When I began to study works of the great artists, I was struck by the dichotomy of truth and illusion in the portrayal of women. From this, rose the larger question: what does it mean to be woman? My oil paintings over several years turned out to fall into three (partial) answers: I. Artists Define an Illusion -- Artists attempt to capture the true essence of their models, but their work must, by definition, be an illusion. II. Forces Define Her Realities -- What a woman becomes is, in part, determined by when, where and to whom she is born and by what she does, feels and experiences. III. Ultimately, She Defines Herself -- A woman becomes her dreams, choices, and memories.
